The uncertainty over whether and when the U.S. and China will reach a trade agreement this year is creating a cloudy outlook for grain volumes this fall. “We expect uncertainty to persist in the grain market due to the foreign tariffs,” said Kenny Rocker, Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) executive vice president for marketing and sales, on his company's first quarter earnings call on April 18. Rocker said UNP's grain carloads were down by 7 percent in the first quarter, driven by reduced exports to China.

Union Pacific Corp. (UNP) reported financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2019 in April. The quarter was negatively impacted by serve weather, including snowfall in the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest, as well as flooding across the network that led to a nearly two-week outage for the company's East-West Mainline in Nebraska. As noted on the conference call, these weather issues were the primary driver of the 2% volume in the first quarter (as noted at an investor event in February, volumes were up 4% through the first six weeks of the year).

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Hub also raised full-year earnings estimates to a range of $3.25 and $3.40 a share. Gross margins rose 40 percent year-over-year, with growth spread out across all four of its service lines, Hub said. Operating income rose 115 percent to $35.6 million, while operating margins increased to 3.8 percent, a 180 basis point increase, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based multi-modal provider said.
